Because fire extinguishers will contaminate your kitchen it should be the last resort to use to put out a grease fire.
If you need to use a fire extinguisher it should be a Class B Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher.
Warning: DO NOT use WATER on a grease fire. The very first thing to do when you have a grease fire is to turn off the heat.
Remember, fires are like people, they need oxygen to breathe.
Therefore, killing the fire is your next step and you do this by cutting off the oxygen.
Steps to Putting Out a Grease Fire
Of course, you would have turned off the flame beneath the pot.
Place a metal lid over the fire.
Use metal as opposed to glass as it will shatter. A metal lid such as:
- the pots cover
- a baking tin
- baking sheet or
- another pot or pan.
The thing is, once the lid is removed the fire might flare again so, to be on the safe side douse it with some baking soda.
Fire Bigger and More Intense Than You Thought
If this is not a small fire you'll need more baking soda than is in your refrigerator or cupboard.
In such an instant, pour some salt on the fire while calling the fire department.
If the fire keeps growing, grab your kids and pets and get out while calling or continuing with the fire department.
Grease Fire Don'ts
Whatever you do, DO NOT:
- Panic.
- Use water. Remember water and oil don't mix therefore pouring water will cause the oil to splash hence spreading the fire. Also, water vapors can carry grease particles spreading the fire.
- Move the pot to the sink or outside. Throwing the pot outside might seem logical in the frenzy of the moment. But trying to move the pot might splash burning oil on you, your kids, pets, home, and any flammable material outside.
- Do not throw any other baking product on the fire. Flour and baking powder might look like baking soda, but they won't have the same reaction. Only baking soda can help put out a grease fire.
Phew, that was hot!
Now that we are equipped with what and what not to do if a grease fire breaks out, hopefully, you'll never need this advice.
