How to Put Out a Grease Fire Quickly

Baking Soda, Fire Extinguisher, Grease Fire, Kitchen Safety     No comments

Fires like people need oxygen to survive. Put out a grease fire by smothering it with a metal lid, then douse it with some baking soda. Most importantly, do not use water on a grease fire.

Because fire extinguishers will contaminate your kitchen it should be the last resort to use to put out a grease fire.

If you need to use a fire extinguisher it should be a Class B Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher.
Warning: DO NOT use WATER on a grease fire.
The very first thing to do when you have a grease fire is to turn off the heat.

Remember, fires are like people, they need oxygen to breathe.

Therefore, killing the fire is your next step and you do this by cutting off the oxygen.

Steps to Putting Out a Grease Fire

Of course, you would have turned off the flame beneath the pot.

Place a metal lid over the fire.

Use metal as opposed to glass as it will shatter. A metal lid such as:
  • the pots cover
  • a baking tin
  • baking sheet or
  • another pot or pan.
Next, you're going to throw some baking soda on it if it was not smothered by oxygen deprivation.
The thing is, once the lid is removed the fire might flare again so, to be on the safe side douse it with some baking soda.

Fire Bigger and More Intense Than You Thought

If this is not a small fire you'll need more baking soda than is in your refrigerator or cupboard.

In such an instant, pour some salt on the fire while calling the fire department.

Remember water and oil don't mix therefore pouring water will cause the oil to splash hence spreading the fire. Also, water vapors can carry grease particles spreading the fire.

If the fire keeps growing, grab your kids and pets and get out while calling or continuing with the fire department.

Grease Fire Don'ts

Whatever you do, DO NOT:
  • Panic.
  • Use water. Remember water and oil don't mix therefore pouring water will cause the oil to splash hence spreading the fire. Also, water vapors can carry grease particles spreading the fire.
  • Move the pot to the sink or outside. Throwing the pot outside might seem logical in the frenzy of the moment. But trying to move the pot might splash burning oil on you, your kids, pets, home, and any flammable material outside.
  • Do not throw any other baking product on the fire. Flour and baking powder might look like baking soda, but they won't have the same reaction. Only baking soda can help put out a grease fire.
Phew, that  was hot!

Now that we are equipped with what and what not to do if a grease fire breaks out, hopefully, you'll never need this advice.

Now it's Your Turn

What do you use baking soda to do in your home?

And of course, if you find this information useful, please share it.

Be safe.

How to Make Your Pool Kids Friendly Using Baking Soda

One thing kids love to do and it's playing in water, especially during the summer.

The larger the body of water the more screams of delight.

But there's one thing they don't like and that's the burning eyes.

As a mom, this is bothersome too.

However, there's something you can do besides giving the kids goggles.

Baking Soda as a Water Treatment Agent

Sodium bicarbonate or bicarbonate of soda is more popularly known as baking soda which is commonly used in baking bread, pancakes, and cookies.

Used in your pool it won't cause the water to rise, but it will make the water clearer and help to prevent eyes from burning.

What You'll Need

  1. one filled pool
  2. 1lb baking soda

How to Do It

Add 1lb baking soda to every 10 000 gallons of water once per week.

And that's it.

Your kids will love you for it.

Over to You

What else do you use baking soda to do?

Sharing is caring... go ahead and share this with your peeps.

I'll owe you one.
